take immigrant are eating people ’s pet is both wildly racist and something I ’d never bear from a presidential debate .

I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that earlier this evening, ABC News hosted the first presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump.

The event covered topics like abortion rights, foreign policy, inflation and, perhaps most controversially, pets.

Yes, at one point, when speaking on immigration, Trump pushed theunfounded, baseless, and honestly racist claimthat Haitian immigrants are eating people’s pets in Ohio.

He said, “Look at what’s happening to the towns all over the United States. A lot of towns don’t want to talk — not going to be Aurora or Springfield. A lot of towns don’t want to talk about it because they’re so embarrassed by it.”

“In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs — the people that came in. They’re eating the cats. They’re eating. They’re eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is what’s happening in our country, and it’s a shame,” he insisted.

Which led Harris to react like this:

And this:

Trump was immediately fact-checked by the moderator David Muir, whosaid, “You bring up Springfield, Ohio, and ABC News did reach out to the city manager there. He told us there have been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed, injured, or abused by individuals within the immigrant community.”

But of course, the rant was already out there, so people online couldn’t help but express their shock over hearing the claim. Here’s what they said:
