Who knew a discussion about temperature could get so heated ? ( No pun intend ! )
Ahhh, the weather. It’s a boring topic people only discuss when they can’t find something else to talk about… and it’s certainly not worth arguing over, right?
Wrong. Because today, talking about the temperature is FAR FROM BORING. It’s actually very, very, very important, and also hilarious at the same time. So I’d pay attention if I were you.
Basically, over on X, user@devahazsparked the age-old Fahrenheit vs. Celsius debate by saying “Celsius is simply inferior for weather.” The tweet has over 1.6K replies, so you KNOW people have their opinions.
Anders Celsius is simply subscript for weatherpic.twitter.com/K21vIoZQSO
So this gives us a good opportunity to join in on that conversation. We MUST settle the Fahrenheit vs. Celsius debate, once and for all. We need this argument to be the last one anyone ever has about this topic.
But before I show you how the internet feels, let’s just go over the basics. Welcome back to grade 3. Fahrenheit starts at 0°, and has a 32°F melting point and 212° boiling point. Celsius has a 0°C melting point and 100°C boiling point.
Here’s what they look like side-by-side:
Virtually every countryin the world uses Celsius — other than the United States, the Bahamas, and a few other smaller countries. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better, but it’s noteworthy for sure.
There are reasons for both Fahrenheit and Celsius. Fahrenheit supporters think it feels better to start a temperature system at 0 and go to 100. Fahrenheit is less math-y, and more HUMAN. Why add minus signs or (on certain thermostats) decimal points, when they’re not necessary?
Fahrenheit is best because 70 degrees is like … 70 % red-hot
Celsius MFs be like “ it ’s 17.39 level outside ! 🤓 ”
What ’s crazy to me is that most Americans will concede that the metric organization is right smart good , but we ’re just used to imperial . But Europeans will bend over backwards justifying a -20 to 40 scale over a 0 - 100 one when it comes to weather condition and clime controls
Who knew a discussion about temperatures could get so heated? (No pun intended!)
But on the other hand, Celsius is literally based in the science of water temperatures, so it makes the most technical sense. Why is it that as soon as we add a negative sign or decimal point, Americans just can’t wrap their brain around it?
You have to memorise 32 ° degree Fahrenheit and 212 ° F , I do n’t have to know what 0 ° F and 100 ° F in C are , b / deoxycytidine monophosphate those temp are completely irrelevant . So no , F is n’t superscript , you ’re just intuitively more used to it .
Indoors , Fahrenheit involve one fewer hex display to controlOutdoors , 0 ° C is a genuine , palpable difference ( there ’s sparkler on the ground , it can snow , etc.)Do average Americans just spend less clock time alfresco not in a car ?
It ’s such a utterly American thing to have an entire temperature standard that makes one matter slightly more commodious . And then progress to a big deal that it ’s soooo much better despite 96 % of the world being used to a global standard that also works dead fine .
You can probably (definitely) tell where I stand on this: if practically the whole world now agrees that Celsius works best, maybe we’re onto something. Especially when it’s backed in science.
I will say, though, I think this person summed it up perfectly. I’d rather be on the logical side, but to each their own.
Celsius ( like beat , cm , mm , etc ) is left brained - it ’s noetic , it makes logical sense , etc . - based on human brain . Fahrenheit ( like yards , ft , in , etc ) is justly brain - it is n’t rational but it feels right - based on human body .
