Another day, another very intense internet debate — one that I’m heavily invested in, despite it not involving me in the slightest. This time, it’s aboutChappell Roan(again). And I’m not sure I completely agree with the internet on this one.
If you don’t know who Chappell is, WOW, where have you been the past few months? Her popularityquickly skyrocketedearlier this summer, around the time when she opened forOlivia Rodrigoon tour. Her singles “Good Luck, Babe!” and “HOT TO GO!” have become hugesongs of the summer, she’s performed at massive venues likeLollapaloozaand Coachella, andpeople are calling herthe newLady Gaga.
Anyway, let me me give you some background. This all started when Chappell was in hot water earlier this month, and she postedvideos on her TikTokcalling out disrespectful fans.
“I don’t care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing to do to people who are famous, or a little famous,“she said. “I don’t give a fuck if you think it’s selfish of me to say no to a photo.”
And earlier this summer, Chappell also went on Drew Afualo’s podcast,The Comment Section, and said she wants to limit her fame. “I’ve pumped the brakes on, honestly, anything to make me more known,” she said. “It’s kind of a forest fire right now. I’m not trying to go do a bunch of shit.”
So after her TikToks went up, the debates began — with lots of people voicing that Chappell’s feelings are totally justified. No person should be stalked or harassed no matter how famous they are…

But others expressed their disappointment that Chappell would complain about taking photos with fans when many of them aren’t actually disrespectful. Some were also confused that Chappell was still makingappearances at huge eventsdespite wanting to"pump the brakes"on her fame.

The backlash began when Chappell cancelled two of her upcoming European tour dates in Paris and Amsterdam and rescheduled a third in Berlin because of"scheduling conflicts.”
Of course, this left many fans out of money — particularly for the one rescheduled show in Berlin, which she cancelled only two days before. Fans had flown in from all over the world to see her in Berlin, so some were pretty angry.

there ’s been rumors about the Paris cancellation for * weeks * from reputable sources but it ’s only 5 days beforehand that we get an official confirmation ? ? ? what ’s the excuse there ? what about the people who booked move around fitting that are now unrefundable ?
But the thing the internet was probably most upset with? The two cancelled shows in Paris and Amsterdam. Because fans noticed that the dates, Sept. 3 and Sept. 4, conveniently align with the week before the VMAs on Sept. 11, where Chappellwill be performing.
People have theorized that the"scheduling conflicts"were actually just rehearsals for her VMAs performance. Fans now feel like Chappell is deprioritizing her fans, and that she’s contradicting her wish to stay more private andlimit her level of fame.
Respectfully , Chappell - if you hate fame so much , possibly you should n’t be playing shows like Lollapalooza and the VMAs . If you just want to make music and have people resonate with it , stick to the shows you booked for true fans who engender tickets BEFORE you became famous .

Like, I don’t think it can be understated just how upset people are. They’re going as far as to call her"disgusting,““fake,“and question whether her fame will even continue.

it ’s jolly common for creative person to cancel their shows in anticipation of award show performances . chappell is n’t the first and she sure enough wo n’t be the last . a heap of y’ all are just jumping the bandwagon and hating just to hate . leave her alone .
And although it looks like most people are in agreement that this isn’t the greatest look for Chappell, lots of fans are coming to her defense, too, explaining how the choice to reschedule for the VMAs actually makes sense.
My hot take is that Chappell Roan performing at the VMAs vs a 500 mortal concert in Paris , an opportunity I guarantee she did not have even 3 months ago , is a switch up that was probably out of her hands and also one she should ABSOLUTELY take .

And my opinion on all of this? I definitely see why people are angry about her cancelling their shows — I know how much work and money people put into buying tickets (coming from someone whotravelled overseas for The Eras Tour). So to have them cancelled just for a televised show is disappointing.
BUUUUUT. Wearetalking about a “new” celebrity here! Regardless of what she said on that one podcast, it makes sense that Chappell would want to perform at iconic events like festivals or award shows. This doesn’t make her disgusting. It just makes her a person figuring out what to do with her newfound meteoric fame. So I think we should tone down the hate, please!
