Halle Berrydid not mince her words when asked about what she’d say to her kids if they chose to enter the entertainment industry.

At the premiere ofThe Unionlast week, Halle was asked byPeopleabout what advice she’d give her children about Hollywood. She replied, “I would tell them, do it the way I did it.”

“I had no nepotism. Nobody helped me. I had to learn from the ground up. They would have to do it the same way,” she continued. “They would have to go pay their dues, learn a craft, work hard, and make it on their own for themselves.”

“That way it’s always theirs. Nobody takes it away. That’s what they would have to do,” she concluded.

Halle brieflylivedin a homeless shelter after running out of money when moving toNew York. Though she called her mother to ask for financial help, she said no — leading the two not to speak for a year. Halle latersaidin 2017, “That’s probably one of the best things she did for me… She said, ‘If you want to be there, then you work it out.’ And I had to work it out.”
