That ’s what we   — Raj Punjabi and Noah Michelson , the host ofHuffPost ’s “ Am I Doing It incorrect ? ” podcast — require Dr. Amanda Redfern ,   an ophthalmologist and assistant professor at Oregon Health & Science University ’s Casey Eye Institute , when she recently dropped by our studio .

″[Sleeping with contact lens in your eyes ] is unfit .   It ’s real bad . Do n’t do it , ” Redfern tell us , adding that this even use to naps .   “ It ’s like a game of Russian roulette . ”

That ’s because you’re able to get a corneal ulcer , which is an infection on part of the eye that a touch covers .

“ It ’s not going to happen every time , but when it take place , it ’s fearsome , ” Redfern state . “ It can be so regretful you could , in really terrible compositor’s case , lose your orb . ”

Redfern also warn us not to operate in any bodily function that could do lens system to become compromised or foul , including swim in a syndicate or lake while wearing contact lens oreven showeringwith them .

“ The problem with tangency lenses is that it will sandwich bacteria between the lens and your cornea , and you’re able to get taint and then have all the complications we babble out about , ” she enunciate .   “ In ecumenical , we frown upon anything where your eye is going to expose to something nonsterile . ”

That includes using strike water to rinse or storage lenses .

When enquire what she would suggest if someone were on vacation and forgot to bring contact lens resolution , pushing them to choose between log Z’s while wearing contacts or using water tap water to store them , Redfern defy to pick either selection .

“ Both of those are amazing options , ” she said . “ I ’d rather you [ throw the contact out ] and just walk around a footling bit blurry for the weekend . ”

One thing Redferndoeswant us to do to keep our eyes healthy ? Use eye protective covering more regularly .

“ I always wear eye aegis if I ’m doing a house project where I ’m hammering ,   sawing — anything where something can fly at my eye , ” she said . “ Always wear eye protective cover , because I actually spend half my clip seeing infirmary consults and the hurt that you see is just crazy . ”

If you terminate up fetch something lodge in your eye , do n’t endeavor to remove it yourself . alternatively , tape a paper cup over your eye and now see a medical pro .
